Protests in UK to stop Rampal Power Plant construction
Dhaka: Bangladeshi expatriates in the United Kingdom on Sunday protested the Bangladesh government decision to set up a coal-fired power plant at Rampal near Sundarban, the largest mangrove forest in the world.
The demonstration also demanded cancellation of the deal with India in this connection.
The demonstrations were staged in London and Nattingham cities under the banner of ‘Let the Voice be Heard’ organisation.
Hundreds of people joined the protest carrying posters and placards.
Speakers at the rally said if the power plant would constructed, its chemical wastages would have severe impacts on Sundarban and its flora and fauna.
They warned that Bangladesh would not be financially benefitted from the project.
They said the project is against the ecological balance and the interest of the nation.
The leaders of the organisation said an application in this regard would be submitted to the Bangladesh and Indian high commissions in London.
