Four child marriages foiled in Sylhet, Satkhira
Dhaka: Local administration on Friday saved four underage girls from being the victims of child marriage in Sylhet and Satkhira.
In Sylhet, locals and police said Sultana Begum, 14, daughter of Tarik Ullah of Ilamergaon village in Rampasha union of Bishwanath upazila, was about to be married off to UK expatriate Osman Gani, 18, son of Sharif Ali of the same village.
Being informed about the marriage arrangement, officials of the upazila administration and police went to the village in the morning and foiled the marriage.
Later, family members of the girl and the UK expatriate boy went to the police station and gave undertaking not to marry off the girl before she comes to age.
Upazila nirbahi officer Mohammad Mashhudul Kabir said they were able to thwart the attempt of the child marriage.
Officer-in-charge of Bishwanath Police Station said they will in no way allow any child marriage in the upazila.
In Satkhira, the administration foiled three child marriages in Sadar upazila.
Three child marriages were arranged at Kamalnagar, in Fingri union and Mahmudpur area in Alipur union in the upazila.
Being informed, a mobile court went to spots and foiled the marriages.
