Remove illegal structures from Karnaphuli riverbanks: HC
Dhaka: High Court on Tuesday ordered the authorities concerned to remove 2,181 illegal structures from the banks of the River Karnaphuli in Chittagong.
An HC bench of Justice Md Rezaul Hasan and Justice Kashefa Hussain passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.
The HC asked Chittagong deputy commissioner to publish a circular in two local newspapers in seven days after receiving copy of the full verdict asking the owners of illegal structures to relocate those within 90 days.
If the owners do not relocate their establishments, the authorities concerned will evict those.
On 18 July 2010, the court passed an order with a rule after a primary hearing on the writ.
The court also ordered to the Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong to submit a list of illegal structures on the banks of the river.
After a survey, the committee submitted a list identifying 2,187 structures as illegal on 8 November 2015.
Advocate Manzill Murshid stood for the petitioner while AKM Zahirul Haque represented the state.
