4 more modern public toilets opened in Dhaka
Dhaka: Dhaka South City Corporation (DNCC) and WaterAid Bangladesh have launched four more modern public toilets in Dhaka.
Dhaka South city mayor Sayeed Khokon inaugurated the toilets on Monday. H&M Foundation, a non-profit global foundation privately funded by the Stefan Persson family of Sweden, financed the construction of the toilets, reports UNB.
Of the four toilets, one was built at Bahadur Shah Park and Municipality Filling Station each and two at Sayedabad Bus Terminal in the South city of the capital.
These visually stunning, female-specific and disable friendly public toilets at busy places of the city are expected to offer users with comfort and convenience.
These modern toilets equipped with different facilities of separate chamber for male and female, locker, hand washing point, shower, safe drinking water facility, 24x7 electricity, CCTV camera, professional cleaner and female caretakers.
Speaking at the inauguration programme, mayor Khokon said ‘we will develop a planned public sanitation system in city for all inhabitants of Dhaka, especially for pedestrians, commuters and women, and people who spend a long time on the road due to heavy traffic.’
The mayor committed to build 47 more modern and women-friendly public toilets in densely populated areas of the city.
Khokon said a citywide cleanliness campaign will start from 1 September,c adding that ‘we shall clean the water of the sacrificed animals within 48 hours.’
Md Khairul Islam, Country Director, WaterAid Bangladesh said City Corporation, WaterAid and H&M Foundation have jointly brought the facility for the commuters, adding that the maintenance will be ensured under the public leaders.
Earlier, seven modern public toilets were opened by WaterAid Bangladesh in indifferent areas of Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation.
