Transport strike called off in Sylhet
Sylhet: Hours after enforcing a strike in Sylhet district, transport owners and workers withdrew it on Friday afternoon following a meeting with the police administration.
The transport owners and workers went into the strike earlier in the morning protesting the vandalism of a ‘Hanif Paribahan’ bus after it killed two people.
Sarak Paribahan Malik-Sramik Okya Parishad enforced the strike.
Talking to reporters, parishad’s Sylhet division unit president Selim Ahmad Falik said they decided to call off the strike upon assurance by the police administration of prompt steps to meet their demands.
Earlier, Abdus Shahid, 27, son of Babul Miah, and UP member Yunus Ali, 30, both residents of Bagharkhola Kalapur village, were killed as the Hanif Paribahan bus knocked their motorcycle at Lalabazar on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the city on Wednesday afternoon.
Following the accident, agitated locals vandalised the bus and set fire to it.
