Dhaka: The social networking sites and news media busted out in anger as three leaders of Juba Mohila League posted a selfie taken beside the ICU bed of Khadiza Akhter Nargis, a Sylhet college girl who was brutally hacked by a Chattra League leader on 3 October.

The group selfie, where three women Awami League leaders posed beside the critically wounded Khadiza, was posted on Facebook profile of Awami League lawmaker Sabina Akhter Tuhin at about 7:00pm on Wednesday.

Former lawmaker and Juba Mohila League General Secretary Apu Ukil and the wing’s Joint Secretary Kohale Quddus were also seen in the selfie.
However, it has been known that the leaders went to visit Khadiza at Square Hospital in Dhaka.

At the high time, when the country is staging demonstration and bursting into protest demanding justice for Khadiza, the callous selfies of the political leaders have been questioned by the citizens.

Amid the flood of criticism, lawmaker Sabina Akhter removed the selfies from her Facebook profile.

Later, the lawmaker Sabina Akhter Tuhin and joint secretary of Juba Mohila League Kohale Quddus apologised and shared statuses on their profiles justifying the selfies.

Sabina Akhter Tuhin on her status said, ‘People are now interested over the selfies rather than Khadiza as if we have done harm by taking those photos.’

The lawmaker also said none but Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina and her party Awami League will be seen beside Khadiza.

On the other hand apologising for the selfies Kohale Quddus said people got wrong ideas from the selfies. The selfies were captured to let the people know about the latest condition of Khadiza.

Khadiza, in her twenties, a student of Sylhet Govt Women’s College, was stabbed allegedly by Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) unit BCL leader Badrul Alam on her way home from college following the refusal of his proposal for having an affair with him.

Hearing the victim’s screams, local people rescued Khadiza and caught Badrul from the spot and handed him over to police after giving him a good thrashing.

Khadiza was taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital from where she was moved to Dhaka at about 12:10am on 4 October as her condition deteriorated.

On 5 October, the physicians of Square Hospital in Dhaka said the condition of l Khadiza, remained unchanged as she was still on life support.

Badrul was also admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in police custody.

The authorities of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) suspended Badrul Alam for attacking Khadiza.

Badrul confessed to his crime before a court in Sylhet on 5 October. Earlier, he was taken to the court amid tight security from hospital where he was undergoing treatment in police custody.
