Police foil march towards Nasirnagar
Dhaka: Police foiled a long march of the students of University of Dhaka, and Jagannath University, from Dhaka to Brahmanbaria demanding justice for Nasirnagar attack victims on Friday morning.
The law enforcers halted the motorcade of five buses which was started towards Nasirnagar from in front of the Jagannath Hall of the University of Dhaka at about 11:00am.
Earlier, the students hired five buses for their protest activities.
However, police asked them to take three microbuses for their long march. The students refused to agree on police’s condition; therefore, they foiled the long march.
Manik Rakkhit, a resident of Jagannath Hall, said, ‘ We collected around Tk 2lakhs from several educational institutions including University of Dhaka and Jagannath University for travelling to Nasirnagar. We were supposed to go for a long march with the amount. But, police asked us to take three microbuses and stopped us we rented five buses.’
Earlier, on 15 November, students of different institutions announced the long march after they blocked the Shahbag intersection protesting the attacks on Nasirnagar Hindus.
Earlier on 30 October, several temples and houses were vandalised in Haripur union of Nasirnagar upazila during a demonstration allegedly over a Facebook post demeaning the holy Kaaba.
Rasraj Das, in his thirties, of Harinber village, allegedly posted a photo on his Facebook wall belittling the holy Kaaba on 29 October.
Several thousand people, including activists of Hefajat-e-Islam and Ahle Sunnat, brought out separate rallies demanding capital punishment of the young man.
At one stage, the protesters vandalised some houses and temples.
