Bus strike on Dhaka-Rajshahi route called off
Rajshahi: The transport strike, enforced by bus workers on the Dhaka-Rajshahi route on Thursday night protesting an attack on bus workers by truckers, was called off on Friday afternoon.
Rajshahi Motor Workers' Union withdrew the strike following a meeting with Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner Abdul Hannan with the leaders of bus and truck workers.
On Thursday night, the motor workers went on the strike on the route following a clash with the truckers triggered by a trivial incident.
Shah Makhdum Police Station Officer-in-charge Zillur Rahman said there was an altercation between the workers of 'Rajanigandhya Paribahan' bus and that of a truck over loading goods on the bus roof at Naudapara Amchattar intersection at about 6:00pm.
At one stage, the truckers beat up the bus workers over it and halted the plying of buses on the route.
As the news spread around, the District Motor Workers' Union suspended bus movement from Shiroil Bus Terminal at about 9:00pm, causing sufferings to passengers.
