Star Jute Mills workers go on strike

Khulna: Production at state-owned Star Jute Mills in Dighalia upazila of the district remained suspended from Thursday as its workers went on a strike demanding immediate payment of arrears.
M Anisur Rahman, head of the finance division of the jute mill, said workers’ wages are five weeks in arrears while that of officials one month.
On Thursday, the mill authorities offered the workers a one-week wage and another week’s wages on Sunday, Anisur said.
However, the workers refused to receive one week’s salary and went on the strike, he said.
The government-run jute mill also has an outstanding payment of Tk 1.23 lakh to West Zone Power Distribution Company, Anisur added.
On January 17, workers of Sagar Jute Mills, a private jute mill in the same upazila, vandalised machines and other equipment demanding that their daily wages be hiked.
The workers got angered as the mill authorities didn’t increase daily wages from January 1 as per the previous announcement.
