5 killed as Kalbaishakhi lashes Rangpur division

Rangpur:  Five people were killed, 32 injured and huge properties, thatched houses, standing crops and trees damaged during Kalbaishakhi that swept over most places in Rangpur division twice on Saturday night, official sources said.

Of the deceased, Ashraful Haque of Taluk Upashu village under Pirgachha upazila and housewife Joynob Begum of the same upazila were killed in separate incidents of tree falling and wall collapse respectively in Rangpur during the Kalbaishakhi.

Besides, Mitu Roy of Khoyerpukur village under Fulbari upazila, Sirajul and his grandson Sabbir of village Hatishal under Nababganj upazila and Aleya Begum of Kamarpara village under Chirirbandar upazila in Dinajpur were killed.

Reports reaching here from different places of Rangpur, Kurigram,Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Panchagarh said over 600 thatched houses, thousands of trees, many educational institutions were damaged in the storm.

Confirming deaths of two persons in Rangpur, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer for Rangpur Abdus Salam told BSS that assessment of damages are being prepared for providing necessary assistance to the affected families.

Sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said some damages have been reported to the standing maize, banana, vegetables and others crops in Rangpur division and field level officials have started assessing the actual damage situation.
