8 killed in road accidents

Dhaka: Eight people were killed and nine others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Panchagarh, and Jessore on Friday.

In the capital, three people, including two drivers, were killed as a pickup and a truck collided at Banani on early morning Friday.

The victims are truck driver Arif, his helper Shamin and pickup driver Mizanur Rahman.

Police, quoting witnesses, said the accident took place near Army Stadium on the New Airport Road of Banani at about 5:30 am when the Shahjalal Airport-bound pickup collided with the Kakoli-bound truck after hitting the road divider as the driver of the pickup lost control over its steering.

Six people of both the vehicles were critically injured. They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where three of them–Arif, Shamim and Mizanur–were declared dead, said Banani Police SI Ataur Rahman.

In Keraniganj, two motorcyclists were killed and their companions injured in two separate road accidents.

Motorcycle rider Md. Uzzal Miah died on the spot and his companion was seriously injured when a truck hit the motorcycle in front of DB office this afternoon.

Eyewitnesses said a Chunkutia bound truck collided head on with the motor cycle coming from opposite direction.

The speedy truck smashed the motorcycle and its rider Md. Uzzal Miah. His companion was seriously injured and locals took him to Mitford Hospital.

Local people detained the truck but its driver and helper managed to escape. Police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Mitford Hospital for post mortem.

Later, police seized the truck and a case was filed with keraniganj police station in this connection.

In another accident at Molarpol area at about 11.00am a lorry collided head on with a motorcycle.

The motorcycle rider Tushar died on the spot and his companion was seriously injured.

In Panchagarh, two persons were killed and four others injured in a road accident on Kalurhat-Sakoa road under Debiganj upazila of the district.

The deceased are Musa Islam of Chandanbari village, Enam, driver of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, of Mounshipara village in the upazila.

Debiganj police officer-in-Charge Kaicher Ali said the accident occurred when a Panchagarh- bound bamboo-laden truck rammed a three-wheeler auto- rickshaw in the area at about 3:00 pm, leaving Musa dead on the spot and Enam died on the way to go to Rangpur Hospital.

All the wounded were admitted to Debiganj Hospital.

In Jessore, a woman was killed and her son injured as a truck hit them on Jessore-Jhenidah road in Churamonkati Bazar area of the district town in the morning.

The deceased is Nur Jahan Begum of Churamonkati village.

The accident took place as the soil-laden truck hit them in front of Brac office while they were going to the bazaar at about 8:00am, leaving them injured, said Sikder Akkas Ali, Kotwali police officer-in-charge.

Later, they were taken to Jessore 250-bedded hospital where doctor declared Nur Jahan dead.
