6 hurt as locals clash with prison guards
Shariatpur: Six people, including a municipality councillor, were injured in a clash between locals and prison guards over a trifling matter in the jail area of the district town on Friday night.
The injured are Siddiqur Rahman, councillor from ward-5 of Shariatpur municipality, jail guards Suja-ud-doula, Shah Alam, Yakub Ali Mollah and Gias Uddin, and local contractor Mojibur Rahman Talukder.
Jail sources said Shafique Kotwal and Masud locked into an altercation with jail guards while plucking basil leaves from in front of the guard barrack before iftar.
As a sequel of the altercation, locals attacked Suja and Yakub as they went outside the jail gate to drink tea after the iftar.
Hearing their screams, other jail guards came out from the barrack and locked in a clash with the locals that left six people injured.
On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.
Meanwhile, jailer Tariqul Islam filed a case against 10 people, including Siddiqur Rahman, in connection with the incident.
