Sylhet city sees heavy rain, waterlogging

Sylhet: Some 32 areas of the city got waterlogged due to torrential rains for several hours on Saturday morning, causing immense sufferings to the city dwellers.

Different areas including Kumarpara, Hawapara, Naiorpool, Mirzajangal, Bhatalia, Manipuri Razbari, Dargah Gate, Bankalapara, Housing Estate, Jalalabad, Loharpara, Bagbari, Charadighirpar, Rayhossain, Kalbakhani, Kuarpar, Kajalshah, Pathantula, Khojarkhola, Bharthokhola, Menikhala, Barkhala, Pathanpara, Upashahar, Sonarpar, Mirabazar, Raynagar, Chhararpara, Jamtala, Dariapara and Lamabazar went under water due to the ceaseless rains since early morning.

Mamunur Rashid, a resident of Bhatalia in the city, said many houses of the area were inundated due to incessant rainfall.

Sylhet City Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury visited several waterlogged areas of the city, talked to the affected people and asked the concerned authorities to launch a drive to free the waterbodies, canals and drains to solve the waterlogging problem.

Meanwhile, three upazilas -- Companiganj, Gowainghat and Doarbazar - of the district were flooded due to rain and onrush of water from the upstream.

Besides, Bholaganj stone quarry in Companiganj upazila was submerged due to the flood.
