Attackers chant ‘Joy Bangla’ slogan, claims BNP
Chittagong: Miscreants chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ slogan attacked the motorcade of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and vandalised vehicles near Chittagong’s Rangunia on their way to Rangamati, claimed BNP leader.
BNP’s standing committee member Amir Khasru blamed Awami League activists for their involvement with the attack, which took place in the Isakhali area of Rangunia at about 10:30am on Sunday.
Amir Khasru said supporters of Awami League leader Hassan Mahmud, also MP of the area, attacked the convoy and vandalised vehicles chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ slogan.
The senior BNP leader said, ‘What happened here is implausible. We were travelling to Rangamati’s Bhotghar via Kaptai to distribute relief among the landslide victims.
Suddenly, a group of around 60 people carrying sticks, rods, knives, and machetes attacked us. The miscreants also hurled stones and vandalised vehicles, said Amir Khasru.
However, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also protested the attack on his motorcade. He said motorcade of BNP’s top leaders came under attack. Other leaders of the party are not safe. People are not safe in the rule of present government.
President of Rangamati district BNP Hazi Mohammad Shah Alam said the attack took place near the Isakhali area of Rangunia at about 10:30am.
Rangamati’s BNP leader said a team of BNP led by its secretary general was travelling to Rangamati to console and support the victims of landslide there. A group of miscreants attack them when the motorcade reached Isakhali.
However, any statement of police in this connection could not be found yet. The BNP delegate team cancelled their drive to Rangamati and returned back to Chittangong city after the incident.
BNP claimed followers of Awami League leader Hassan Mahmud swooped on the motorcade and vandalised the vehicles, which left several BNP leaders injured with the broken pieces of window glass.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam will hold a press conference in Chittagong about the attack, said BNP leader Hazi Mohammad Shah Alam.
At least 158 people were died as landslides hit Rangamati, Bandarban, and Chittagong due to heavy rainfall.
