Dhaka: Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra artiste Subrata Sengupta died of cancer at a city hospital on Tuesday.

His wife Joli Sengupta told UNB that Subrata, who had been suffering from prostate cancer, breathed his last at Green Life Hospital in the early morning.

The musician was admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on May 6 due to various health complications and later shifted to Green Life Hospital, she said.

His dead body will be taken to the Postogola cemetery for his funeral, Joli Sengupta said.

Subrata left behind wife, two sons- Subhadip Sengupta and Sangeet Sengupta-and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.

Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor expressed deep shock at his death and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereave family members..

Sengupta was the son of Swadeshi Movement leader Sudhir Sengupta.

While he was a student of Barin Majumdar's music school in Dhaka's Segunbagicha in 1971, he joined the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra.

Sengupta wrote many Liberation War songs, including 'Rokto Chai Rokto Chai, Ottacharider Rokto Chai'. He also wrote songs about the Language Movement and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
