Lightning strikes kill 10
Dhaka: Ten people were killed and five others injured in lightning strikes in Habiganj, Pirojpur, Chapainwabganj and Laxmipur districts on Wednesday.
According to reports, four people were killed and two others injured by lightning strike at Birat Haor in Ajmirganj upazila of Habiganj district in the morning. The identities of the deceased could not be known yet.
Police said a thunderbolt struck the six people while they were fishing in the haor from a boat amid rain around 9 am, leaving all of them injured. They were taken to upazila health complex where doctors declared four of them dead.
In Chapainawabganj, three farmers died and three others injured as lighting hit them while working in a field at Singaril in Nachole around 1 pm.
The deceased were identified as Masud Rana of Singaril area in Nachole upazila, Tariqul of Sarjan area of Sadar upazila, and Abdur Rahim of Shibnagar village in Gomastapur upazila.
The injured farmers –Swapon, Zillur and Razzak–were admitted to Nachole Upazila Health Complex.
In Pirojpur, two people–Asim, and Rajib of Kadamtala villge in Sadar upazila–sustained injuries after being struck by a thunderbolt at Gensa Bazar in the upazila at about 3:00pm.
They were taken to Sadar hospital where doctors declared them dead.
In Laxmipur, a streak of lightning hit Qamrul Islam, a class III student of Matirhat Government Primary School at about 2:00pm while going out of his house, leaving him dead on the spot.
