Rain, heavy traffic dim Eid journey
Eid holiday-makers are suffering from traffic gridlock on their way home to the northern districts of the country, thanks to the heavy downpour and vehicles going out of order in the middle of the road.
Highway police said the Dhaka-Tangail Highway had been jam-packed with heavy traffic since yesterday night, causing slow vehicular movement. Besides, several vehicles went out of order worsening the already horrible traffic congestion there.
An exhaustingly long tailback on the highway was reported. It stretched from Kaliakair Chandra intersection to Bhogra Bypass on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway.
Another report said that the 25-km tailback inflicted immeasurable sufferings on homebound people. Vehicles were seen moving bumper-to-bumper on the highway. Traffic police said the tailback took place due to heavy pressure of vehicles.
Mamun, a private bank employee who had been heading to Rajshahi for Eid vacation, described the situation as horrendous. He said it took him seven hours to reach Gazipur from the capital’s Gabtali Bus Terminal.
Apart from people of other professions and students from the capital, several lakhs of apparel workers from over 3,000 garment factory in Gazipur are rushing towards home for vacationing.
An estimated number of eight million people left Dhaka on Thursday, the last working day before Eid-ul-Fitr.
The home-bound people are facing less hassle this year than that of the previous years with concerned authorities are working to ensure their smooth journey.
