Lakshmipur: Amid the growing concern over deaths of children in torture across the country, a nine-year-old boy was beaten and critically injured by some local people over a trivial matter at Charjagabandhu village in Kamalnagar upazila of Lakshmipur.

The incident came to light on Thursday after a case was filed with Kamalnagar police accusing four people.

The victim Shipon, a class I student of a local seminary, is receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Local people said some people, including Didar Hossain, his brother Murad Hossain, and Yeasin beat up the boy for defecating on the bank of a pond at the village on 27 July.

The attackers also hit the boy with brick and smashed his head, leaving him seriously injured.

He was taken to Kamalnagar Upazila Health Complex and later was shifted to Noakhali General Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

Following further deterioration of Shipon’s condition, doctors referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on 6 August.

The Kamalnagar police said Hasan, uncle of the victim, filed a case against four people with the police on 6 August.

Police arrested Didar Hossain on the same day for his alleged involvement in the incident.
