Satkhira: An alleged robber was injured in a ‘gunfight’ between his cohorts and police in Ramchandra area of Satkhira in early hours of Tuesday.

The injured is Shahidul Islam, 32, son of Akbar Ali, a resident of Rasulpur Pashchimpara of the town.

Police said on a tip-off that a gang of robbers was trying to commit robbery in the area, a team of police launched a drive to arrest them at about 2:30am.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers hurled two hand bombs and opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back, triggering a gunfight that left Shahidul of the gang bullet injured.

Police arrested Shahidul while his associates managed to flee the spot.

Shahidul was admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital under police custody.

Police also recovered two sharp weapons, one bullet shell and some parts of bomb from the spot.

Shahidul was a member of inter-district robber gang, police said.

Satkhira police sub-inspector Kamal Hossain confirmed the incident.

Shahidul’s father Akbar Ali claimed that police arrested Shahidul from Judge Court on Monday and then they fired on him at night.
