2 killed in Jessore ‘gunfight’

Jessore: Two men were shot to death in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Manirampur upazila in Jessore in early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased are Bajlu and Sayeed, resident of Jaipur village of Manirampur.

Police said both of them were activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

Jessore senior assistant superintendent Reshma Sharmin said the gunfight occurred as police went for a drive to recover bombs from Begartali area of the upazila at about 2:30am.

Rabiul Islam, Bajlu’s brother, told NTV online Bajlu and Sayeed were BNP activists. Bajlu was in bail of in two cases.

Reshma Sharmin said police recovered nine crude bombs, 12 fire bombs, one shooter gun and two bullets.

She said Manirampur police held Bajlu and Sayeed on Tuesday evening. According to their information, police went for a drive to recover bombs and miscreants opened fire to the police.

Bajlu and Sayeed received bullets as police fired back the miscreants.

Bajlu and Sayeed were taken to Jessore Medical College and Hospital where doctor declared them dead, added the senior ASP.

Police said there are six cases against the deceased with Manirampur police.
