3 killed in police firing in Tangail
Tangail: Three people were killed and at least twenty others injured on Friday while police opened fire on a procession protesting assault on a woman and her son after stripping them off at Kalihati in Tangail.
The deceased are Faruk Hossain of Kalihati upazila and Shamim Miya of Ghatail Upazila and another named Shyamol.
Traffic movement remained halted on Tangail-Mymensingh highway after the incident.
On 15 September, one Rafikul Islam and his aides from Satutia village of Kalihati upazila assaulted a woman and her son after stripping them off.
Witnesses said, Local people brought out a protest procession today. When procession was heading towards the police station, police protested them and a clash took place.
At one point, police fired bullets and tear shells to control the situation. Twenty people were injured at that time. Two of them died at Kalihati Upazila Health Complex and Tangail Medical College Hospital. Another died while he was being taken to hospital.
However, Kalihati police officer-in-charge Shahidul Islam denied the claim of people being killed in the firing.
Shahidul Islam said two people have been arrested over the assault on the woman and her son and preparation is on to file a case over the issue.
