I was molested when I was young: Sonam Kapoor

Update: 15 December, 2016, 17:32

In a startling revelation, Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor has opened up about her traumatic past and said that she was molested in her younger days.

Actor Anil Kapoor’s daughter was speaking at a roundtable that included Bollywood leading female stars including Anushka Sharma, Vidya Balan, Radhika Apte and Alia Bhatt.

In conversation with Rajeev Masand during the round-table that included 2016’s strongest performers, Sonam Kapoor said, “I know I have been molested when I was younger. And it was very traumatising.” Sonam is known to be brutally honest and bold with her words. She was part of the annual round-table show that aims at assessing the year’s best performers in different categories.

It doesn’t come as a surprise in a country where most of such cases go unnoticed or unreported.

It’s not just Sonam Kapoor who spoke about relatively lesser mentioned issues. Her contemporaries like Vidya Balan, Anushka Sharma, Alia Bhatt and Radhika Apte also were part of the show.

Known to call a spade a spade, this revelation from the actor will give strength to other survivors to come out in the open. In fact, Vidya said after Sonam’s comment, “It is not her fault and that is the biggest thing a victim deals with.”

Adding to it, Anushka recalls the moment of her childhood when her mother would ask her constantly if she was being touched inappropriately. She expressed at that point of time she would feel silly about her but now it does make sense to her.

Radhika said, “I have started questioning morality.” In the end, we see Alia accepted that celebrities live in a bubble. “We really do live in a bubble. Our reality is not reality,” she said.

These five ladies have given the strongest performance in 2016. Sonam stunned everyone with her portrayal of Neerja Bhanot, a flight attendant who died while saving the lives of passengers on the ill-fated Pan Am flight. Alia Bhatt’s performance in Udta Punjab, Kapoor & Sons and Dear Zindagi got accolades while Radhika was appreciated for her gutsy performances in Parched, Phobia and Kabali.
