Dhaka: Chromatic Delusions, a solo exhibition of oil paintings by Maksuda Iqbal Nipa is now running at Bengal Art Lounge in Dhaka.

Representative of the European Union to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon, and Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman jointly inaugurate the exhibition on Saturday 31 October.

Trained in Japan, where she studied oil painting techniques, Maksuda Iqbal Nipa is renowned for her colourful abstractions which she often composes on very large canvases. These exceptional formats form the backbone of ‘Chromatic Delusions’, where a number of impressive non-figurative artworks explore the depth and range of various tonalities. The viewer is in perpetual awe when facing Nipa’s chromatic studies: the slightest variation in lighting, distance or viewing angle seem to constantly reshuffle the entire composition.

‘The pigments and the surface are Nipa’s point of departure’ writes art critique Javed Jalil. ‘She then works the material with blind intuition combined with a deep feeling for the paint. Substances fuse and mingle into a holier fusion where mind, body and spirit thrive to sing as one’, he adds. Indeed, Maksuda Iqbal Nipa’s compositions cannot be grasped at a glance and require an active engagement from the viewer. Consenting to that effort is a meaningful experience, for the artworks on display in this exhibition invite to introspection.

Carrying the long tradition of Bangladeshi abstract painting a step further, ‘Chromatic Delusions’ proposes a dialogue between the Modern and the Contemporary. It is a pleasure for Bengal Art Lounge to present this exhibition to the public.

The exhibition will continue until Saturday, 21 November, 2015 and will be open daily from 12:00noon to 8:00pm.
