Dhaka: The 2nd autobiography of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been published marking the 98th birthday of the great leader.

The book titled "Karagarer Rojnamcha (Diary in Jail) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman" has been handed over to his daughters -- Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana.

Director General of Bangla Academy Shamsuzzaman Khan formally handed over a copy of the book to them at a simple ceremony at Ganobhaban on Wednesday evening.

Bangla Academy published the 332-page book on Bangabandhu's jail life in Bangla on the occasion of the 98th birthday of the great leader.

Receiving the book, the Prime Minister thanked Bangla Academy for its noble initiative of publishing the book on the historical jail life of the great leader from 1966 to 1968 during the Pakistan regime.

In an emotion-choked voice, Sheikh Hasina recalled that Bangabandhu used to write his daily political and other activities of his contemporary time and maintained the practice even in his jail life.

She said the Pakistan government seized six dairies written by Bangabandhu when he was released from jail in December, 1969 and added that four of them were returned later.

However, one of the two remaining diaries was later recovered with the help of the Special Branch after her government came to power in 2009, she said.

Describing the looting of Bangabandhu's residence many times, including in 1971 and 1975, the Prime Minister said the khatas had been saved as her mother kept those along with her belongings with care.

She also elaborated how the books were compiled and said she along with other compilers, including late Baby Moudud, often shed tears going through details of the autobiography.

Hasina also announced that two more autobiographies of Bangabandhu -- one on the Agartala conspiracy case and other on his China tour -- will be published soon.

At the ceremony, Shamsuzzanan Khan said, "Karagarer Rojnamcha" will formally be published on March 17 and then the book will be available in Bangla Academy book stalls.

He said Prof Fakrul Alam of Dhaka University’s English department will translate the book into English in the next two months.

Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki, State Minister for Health Zahid Maleque, Prof Fakrul Alam and Principal Secretary to the PM Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim were present on the occasion.
