Sweden beat Switzerland 1-0 in World Cup

Unbeaten Switzerland crashed out of the FIFA World Cup 2018 as Sweden moved into the quarterfinals beating Switzerland by 1-0 margin in the round of 16 match held at Krestovsky Stadium in Russia on Tuesday.

After a barren first half, Sweden shot into lead in the 66th minutes of the play. Toivonen sent an excellent pass to Forsberg who took a few strides and unleashed a thunderous shot, but the ball took a big deflection off the foot of Swiss defender Akanji on the way through a beats Swiss goalkeeper Sommer in the net (1-0), reports the BSS.

As expected Sweden went further into defensive shell while Switzerland in order to search for the cherished equaliser.

Swedish defense played admirably to hold on and frustrated Swiss strikers by foiling their numerous attempts.

Sweden got a penalty but after VAR review it was cancelled. Swiss player Lang for a serious foul was given marching order in 94th minutes of the play as referee allowed extra minutes for injury time.

Emil Forsberg’s deflected goal that seals Sweden’s spot in the quarter-finals for the first time since 1994.

Switzerland had their chance to press but their finishing was poor, and they were punished as Shaqiri and co were sent packing home.

Sweden will play against the winner of Colombia vs England in the quarterfinal scheduled to be held on July 7 in Samara.

Earlier, Sweden emerged group F champions beating South Korea by 1-0 goal in their group opening match, lost to Germany by 1-2 goals in their group second match and recorded a 3-0 drubbing over Mexico in their group third match.

On the other hand, Switzerland finished group E as group runners-up playing out to a 1-1 goal draw with Brazil in their group opening match, beat Serbia by 2-1 goals in their group second match and played to a 2-2 goal draw with Costa Rica in their third and final group match.
