Dhaka: Australia has expressed its solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and the international community in strongly condemning the ‘violent acts of terrorism’ in Dhaka that resulted in the deaths of 22 victims, including foreign nationals, Bangladeshis and police.  

The Australian High Commission offered its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

‘Terrorism constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security,’ the High Commission said in a statement on Monday.

On Saturday, Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop expressed her strong condemnation of the attack and her sympathy for the people of Bangladesh.

‘We stand ready to support Bangladesh in its efforts to counter violent extremism and eradicate the scourge of terrorism,’ said the statement.

Australia today strongly condemned the attack at the Dhaka cafe where 20 hostages and two other police officers were killed on July 1.

In a press release issued from the Australian High Commission in Dhaka, the mission said ‘terrorism constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.’

‘We stand ready to support Bangladesh in its efforts to counter violent extremism and eradicate the scourge of terrorism,’ the press release read.

Wanja Campos da Nóbrega, Brazilian envoy to Bangladesh, termed the cafe attack a ‘cowardly act’ and expressed condolences for the victims and voiced solidarity with Italy, Japan, India and the US.

‘The Brazilian government condemns vehemently this violent act and supports Bangladesh in its fight against terrorism,’ Nóbrega said.

Iran condemns attack

Iran Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi condemned terrorist attacks in Dhaka and expressed condolence with Bangladesh, said in a statement release.

He called on the international community to listen to the peace seeking voice of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the serious campaign against terrorism and extremism.

The terrorist move proves that terrorism has no boundaries jeopardizing the international peace and security regardless of nationality, religion and geographical location requiring collective contribution.

This inhuman carnage is very painful and all should come together to seriously thwart the threats posed by terrorism to the international community, he said.

Adopting double-standard policies in dealing with such heinous crimes will destabilize the region and disrupt the international peace and security, said the spokesman.

OIC condemns Gulshan attack

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was profoundly shocked to learn the unprecedented terrorist attack in Dhaka.

The OIC Secretary General, Iyad Ameen Madani, condemned in the strongest term.

The Secretary General reiterated the solidarity of OIC and its firm support to Bangladesh in these critical and painful circumstances.

He expressed his most sincere condolences to the Government of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh and to the families of the victims and wished the wounded quick recovery.

Madani reiterated OIC’s firm position against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

He called again for concerted collective international efforts to defeat this menace against humanity and stressing on the need to understand and address extremism, violence and terrorism in a comprehensive approach taking into account the political, economic, and social contexts.
