Dhaka: Accusing the government of trying to assassin Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia in a planned way through an ‘armed attack’ on her motorcade in the city’s Karwanbazar area, BNP on Monday asked the ruling party not to force them to go for alternative thinking by continuing such ‘terrorist acts’.

‘With this attack by the government-sponsored terrorists, the election atmosphere has seriously been destroyed. We want to clearly tell the government that don’t force us to go for alternative thinking by continuing such terror acts,’ said BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed.

Asked what did they meant alternative thinking, the BNP leader said they will say when such a situation will arise.

Addressing a hurriedly-called press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan headquarters, Moudud said, ‘The armed attack was made on BNP chairperson’s motorcade during her election campaign in Karwanbazar as a deliberate attempt to kill her in a planned way. We strongly condemn and protest it.’

Claiming that the attackers injured Khaleda’s three security personnel and their three women leaders and damaged many vehicles, including an ambulance, he said it has manifested the government’s fascist attitude.

The BNP standing committee member said the withdrawal of police from the BNP chief’s residence suggests that the attack on her is part of the government planned game.

Moudud claimed the government sensing their sure debacle in the April 28 city polls has resorted to fascist and terror activities.  ‘It reflects the government’s weakness.’

He also alleged that the prime minister and her cabinet colleagues and IGP’s comments to resist Khaleda Zia if she tries to carry out election campaign have inspired and provoked the ‘terrorists’ to attack her.

Moudud affirmed that their chairperson will continue her electioneering despite obstacles by the Awami League ‘cadres’ abetted by police. ‘Our chairperson will carry out her electioneering braving all the obstacles.’

‘The more they’ll carry out such incident the more their votes will get reduced and people will give a befitting reply to these activists through their ballots,’ the BNP leader observed.

Khaleda’s motorcade came under an attack by miscreants during her electioneering in the city’s Karwanbazar area in favour of her party-backed Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral candidate Tabith Awal, leaving three people injured.
