Arafat Sunny seeks bail to Cyber Tribunal
Dhaka: Bangladesh National Cricket team player Arafat Sunny filed petition to Cyber Crime Tribunal on Thursday seeking bail from a case filed against him under Information Technology (IT) Act.
Bangladesh Cyber Crime Tribunal’s judge KM Shamsul Alam said Sunny sought bail through a petition filed by his counsels.
Lawyer M Jewel Ahmed told a hearing will be held over the bail petition and date for the hearing will be fixed on Thursday afternoon.
Earlier, on 24 January, Mohammadpur police Sub-inspector Yahya Ahmed, also the investigation officer in the case, presented Sunny before Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Megistrate’s court after he spent a day in police custody.
On the same day, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jakir Hossain Tipu rejected a bail petition of Sunny and sent him to jail.
Arafat Sunny is now at Central Jail in Dhaka’s Keraniganj.
On 22 January, Dhaka Metropolitan Court’s Megistrate Pranab Kumar Hui granted a day police custody for quizzing Sunny.
Earlier, on 22 January morning, the Mohammadpur police arrested Bangladesh national team off-spinner Sunny in Aminbazar.
Investigation officer, Mohammadpur police Sub-inspector (SI) Yahya Ahmed said Arafat Sunny registered a fake account on the name of the woman, reported to be his girlfriend, and was blackmailing her by posting exposed photographs of her on Facebook.
Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Masudur Rahman said a team of Mohammadpur police conducted a drive in the area and arrested the cricketer at about 9:00am.
Jamaluddin Mir, officer‐in‐charge of the police station, said Nasrin Sultana, a friend of Sunny, filed the case against the cricketer under the ICT Act on 5 January.
Arafat Sunny is a left-arm off-spinner and left-handed batsman of Bangladesh National Cricket team. The 30-year-old player made his debut for Dhaka Division in 2001. He broke into Bangladesh’s one-day international (ODI) side in early 2014.
He took 2-31 in his first outing against Sri Lanka, but his two best performances came in November 2014 when he took 4-27 and 4-29 in two matches against Zimbabwe, in a good show of form ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
