Sheikh Hasina, Mamata discuss Teesta issue
New Delhi: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday discussed the long-pending Teesta water-sharing deal between Bangladesh and India.
They discussed the issue when Mamata Banerjee met Sheikh Hasina at Rashtrapati Bhaban where she is staying.
PM's Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury said they also discussed the overall bilateral issues of the two countries, including the transboundary water management and sharing of water of the common rivers.
Mamata informed Hasina about her government's readiness to strengthen cooperation with Bangladesh in the power sector.
The much-hyped meeting between Sheikh Hasina and Mamata Banerjee was held amidst a row between Indian central government and that of West Bengal over the signing of Teesta Water Sharing deal with Bangladesh which remained pending for the last six years due to Mamata's rigid stance.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in New Delhi on a four-day official visit at the invitation of her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.
Amid the row between Indian ruling party with Mamata on a number of political issues, Indian President Praban Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited Mamata to come to New Delhi and join the programme with Sheikh Hasina to pave the path for striking the Teesta deal.
In his official statement after the official talks between Dhaka and New Delhi, Modi expressed his conviction to reach a solution to sign the Teesta deal as soon as possible.
Sheikh Hasina was also optimistic about making the West Bengal Chief Minister agree to sign it, as it is crucial for Bangladesh to protect its ecology and economy.
